Carnot cycle heat pump8/30/2023 ![]() The analysis revealed that the borehole thermal resistance, which was 0.015 m K W-1, can be reduced by ~80% when compared to that evaluated during a TRT without forced convection. Forced convection was created by circulating groundwater in the borehole with a surface pump. The TRT was carried out in a HGHE made with a double U-pipe composed of thermally enhanced high-density polyethylene (HDPE). In this study, a thermal response test (TRT) was performed in a groundwater-filled borehole to evaluate the potential upgrade of such hybrid ground heat exchangers (HGHEs). Alternatively, a pump can be used to force convection inside the borehole. Thus, groundwater fills the free space usually taken by the grout, allowing internal free convection. However, in Scandinavian countries, a different approach is sometimes adopted the opening of the borehole is sealed and a metal casing is installed until solid rock. ![]() Ground heat exchangers (GHEs) used in vertical ground-coupled heat pump systems of North America are commonly backfilled with grout to avoid groundwater infiltration. ![]()
